Bosses at UHMBT have since said that improvements have been made and action is ongoing in response to the CQC's concerns. During this inspection we rated this service as 'good' overall, with 'good' ratings in safe, effective, responsive and well-led, and a rating of 'outstanding' for caring because: Published Entrances, waiting areas and circulation spaces built 40 years ago were not designed for the current volumes of patients so become congested and over-crowded. The improvement work undertaken so far includes: Additional building work on the existing wards in Medical Unit 2 is taking place to enhance the accommodation. Ward 23 at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary is located in Medical Unit 2. I was delighted with my care. The hospital provides elective day case surgery for orthopaedic surgery, ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), maxillofacial, urology and general surgery. The programme for care of patients with tracheostomy across wards was comprehensive. Since the last inspection we found that there had been some improvements in staffing. Patients discharged from critical care should receive a ward follow up visit by critical care nurses within 36 hours of discharge, it was reported that this could not be provided consistently by staff in the unit and was affected by activity and staffing resources. [2] [3] It lies to the south of the city centre, between the A6 road and the Lancaster Canal. The geographic location of FGH is remote, meaning it is essential we accommodate the latest digital technologies and robotics to create an agile network of care across the region. The CQC observed significant amounts of black and grey dust on several items of equipment when they visited the medical assessment unit. During our last inspection we noted that there was no information available in the departments for patients who had a learning disability or written information in formats suitable for patients who had a visual impairment. Ward 23 at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary is located in Medical Unit 2. Most clinical audit outcomes were comparable to expected national standards within surgery. For services we haven't rated we use ticks and crosses to show whether we've asked them to take further action or taken enforcement action against them. Facilities at Furness General Hospital are generally more modern than at Royal Lancaster Infirmary and the site has good functional compliance. We previously rated this service as good in 2017. Many of the patient toilet facilities are inadequate partition-style facilities, with two or three toilets in one room. Supernumerary induction for new nursing staff was good with an organised approach to nurse appraisal and nursing achievement of competence in critical care skills. Nurses, doctors, ward managers and infection control professionals shared their harrowing . Given todays standards, the cubicle would be deemed non- compliant and not fit for purpose. This was an improved arrangement since our last inspection, with a 50% reduction in annual admissions, (from 46 to 24). Let's make care better together. I was brought in by ambulance from Westmorland General with extremely high blood pressure. Key services were available seven days a week. The ward is not connected to the main hospital and requires the patient to be transferred within an NHS or private ambulance. The trust planned care to meet the needs of local people, took account of patients individual needs, and made it easy for people to give feedback. The survey of bereaved relatives results were positive in relation to dignity and respect afforded to patients. Concerns: The CQC has issued a letter of intent to UHMBT. Nurses do the heavy lifting, I dont understand they are just as qualified in fact I can bet nurses are better at doing IVs than doctors because they do it all the time wheres doctor looks at you, scribbles something down or better yet gives you paracetamol and sends you to another place to deal with you. Our ambition is to improve the environment for patients and staff, including increasing the single room provision. The nurses and receptionists were great, doctor - cant tell. Despite delays in A&E, which are obviously not the fault of the staff (9h wait), I would like to sincerely thank all the staff at the A&E unit, and emergency day assessment unit for their caring, compassionate and effective treatment that I received for an unexpected, adverse reaction to some drugs which had been prescribed for me, and which was quickly resolved. Corridors remain too narrow, making it a challenge to safely move patients around the hospitals and navigate day-to-day hospital traffic. Staff in the medical service did not always assess swallowing abilities in a timely manner. As his obstetrics/gynaecology placement ended in March, and the Labour wards at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary were converted to Covid wards, he had to make a decision: Go home or stay and help at the care home, who were already struggling for staff. If integral shower and toilet facilities were available for each multi-bed bay or single room, then partial closures would be possible, increasing our bed capacity and ability to cope with outbreaks.
